New Products: Bafang Gets A Power Boost
BAFANG GETS OVERPOWERED
Bafang has a new mid-drive motor called the Ultra Max. It’s labeled as a 1000-watt motor, which is about four times the power of a mid-drive of a normal motor on the market today. Also, it boasts nearly twice the torque of any other mid-drive on the market at 160 N/m. But wait, there’s more. It can be modified to put out over 2000 watts of power.
The new motor is claimed to pull a peak of 1600 watts and tops out at 28 mph, making it a Class 3—sort of. With that much power, it will only be legal on private land or perhaps OHV areas. The motor itself is quite a bit bigger than the venerable Bafang BBSHD, a favorite among builders. Because of the larger size, the motor is more efficient, as the relative speed of the magnets passing by the motor coils is faster. The magnets on the Ultra motor are also mounted further away from the copper coils, which increases cooling.
You can get the motor and a pre-built frame from Luna Cycles, or they will sell you just the motor and shell if you’re a DIY kind of rider.
