SANTA CRUZ ENTERS THE E-BIKE MARKET
Following in the footsteps of Pivot and Intense, Santa Cruz is the latest mid-tier “cult” brand to enter the electric-assist fray despite a long-held “anti-e-bike” attitude. The new e-bike takes the name of the Heckler, which is one of their most popular and earliest models, having first appeared back in 1996.
Today’s Heckler carries forward the brand’s reliance on the VPP suspension system, along with Shimano-powered pedal-assist and a carbon frame to create something light and agile that amplifies the fun. New for the e-Heckler is a lower-link VPP that has been tweaked to deliver a slightly lower anti-squat ride. This adds a touch more support and traction over rough stuff when pedaling seated—a major advantage of having a Shimano motor on your side.
The Santa Cruz features a Shimano E8000 motor and 504-Wh battery integrated into the frame, and there are a range of models—from the R for $7399 to the S model at $8399, the X01RSV for $10,599 to the top-of-the-line XX1 AXS RSV—at a wallet-splitting $13,099.
The R has a claimed weight of 47.66 pounds and is spec’d with a RockShox Yari RC fork and a Super Deluxe Select rear shock, SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, SRAM Guide RE brakes and 27.5-inch aluminum rims.
The S version weighs in at a heavier 47.78 pounds and steps up in spec with a Fox 36-E Float Performance fork, a Rockshox Super Deluxe Select+ shock, SRAM GX Eagle components, SRAM Code R brakes and still keeps aluminum rims.
The X01 RSV weighs in at 46.5 lbs and uses the Fox 36-E Float Performance Elite fork, RockShox Super Deluxe Select Ultimate rear shock, SRAM X01 Eagle components, SRAM Code RSC brakes and steps up to Santa Cruz Reserve 30 V2 27.5-inch carbon rims.
Flagship-model XX1 AXS RSV weighs in at 46.29 pounds, uses the same Fox 36-E Float Performance Elite fork and RockShox Super Deluxe Select Ultimate rear shock, but uses SRAM XX1 Eagle components. Brakes and rims are the same.
In an interview, Santa Cruz owner Rob Roskopp said that he sees that by 2025, 50 percent of Santa Cruz bikes will be e-bikes.
