It has 160mm of travel, front and rear, and a 29″ wheel up front and 27.5″ rear. Haibike have pushed their geometry forward significantly. Increasing the seat tube angle to 76.3 degrees will give greater uphill climbing comfort. They also lengthened the reach to 461mm (large) which means stability and space on fast descents.
The battery is new for Yamaha, a big 600Wh battery that’s integrated into the down tube. The PW-X2 motor is the new generation that features 80Nm of torque, support for much higher cadence, and a new automatic mode that seamlessly shifts between modes based on rider input torque. We’ve spent time on that setting, and we like it a lot. It’s similar to Bosch’s eMTB mode, but it’s located outside of Yamaha’s other modes, so riders still have the option of all the traditional modes, from Eco to EX-PW.
WHO IT’S MADE FOR
The All Mountain 7 has a wide usage range. It can be used as a relaxed trail cruiser or an aggressive all mountain machine. It has a clean simple integrated look with a very reliable motor. It will appeal to progressive/aggressive riders as well as the Haibike base. If you want good value carbon frame technology then this is an important bike to consider.
The new geometry gives the rider one of the most comfortable riding positions we have tried to date. After a 3000 ft climb we found our body still relaxed when we got to the top. Bike stability is one of the best we have tried on steep loose climbs. The Yamaha motor has a lot of power, with immediate support from zero cadence in high power modes.
On smoother trails where we had more time to pay attention we noticed how the rider has a lot of space to find a good body position forward on the bike where you load the front wheel in corners. It was a relaxed action, you don’t need lots of skill to find the perfect position. Jumping and floating the bike down the trail was a very relaxed affair. We found ourselves thinking, “Is this a race bike?” We could float the bike around the trail very easily just playing whenever we wanted. The bike really stays planted and in contact with the trail giving lots of grip at all times.
We rode in some extreme descents in Finale Ligure the Mecca of Enduro in Europe and also long exploration rides in Rincine, Tuscany. On rough rocky descents the bike feels stable and the suspension supports the rider actions well, with lots of mid travel support. The big 38 fork is very smooth and the extra stiffness is appreciated in rocky holes where it is hard to hop over them. Combined with a 29/27.5 setup, sharp corners were easy to navigate at speed.
