Giro is well-known among cyclists, thanks to its wide range of products, including helmets, goggles, shoes and more. In fact, Giro offers enough stuff to deck yourself out from head to toe. The latest addition to Giro’s line is the all-new Source helmet. Giro’s goal for the Source helmet was to meet the needs of trail riders with a quality helmet at a modest price. Did Giro hit its mark? Let’s find out.
Tech features:
The Source is built from an in-molded polycarbonate shell and wrapped in a hard outer shell with 16 ventilation ports. Giro then added a MIPS liner inside for safety and used anti-microbial padding for comfort. This helmet features Giro’s Roc Loc 5 fit system, along with an adjustable visor. Size-medium helmets weigh around 340 grams and are sold for just $120. Meanwhile, Giro’s new Manifest helmet with advanced Spherical technology costs $260 and weighs roughly 6 grams more. Test riders set out to see how the new affordable Source helmet compares with the more expensive Manifest and if the Source could hold up to our thrash testing.
Field test results:
The new Source helmet has a classic Giro look with a modern design and features built specifically for mountain bikers. The helmet is less than half the price of Giro’s Manifest spherical helmet, which features a two-piece, ball-and-socket design that offers advanced impact protection. The Source helmet, on the other hand, uses a traditional MIPS safety liner. The Source helmet has deep coverage in the back and a nice fit system, but it is not as refined as the one in the more expensive Manifest option. Some features are only seen on the Manifest are an integrated eyewear hold, a goggle gripper and a Trail Air Fit system. The Source helmet may not have all the bells and whistles, but at half the price, it’s a well-built helmet that should meet many riders’ needs. Giro’s Source helmet is right for any rider who wants a trail-ready helmet at an affordable price with safety-first thinking and a sharp look.
