Maria Emmerich Loves E Bikes!
Maria Emmerich is a best-selling author of many great cookbooks and books about low-carb eating, some that she’s done with her husband, Craig. She fell in love with e-bikes several years ago, and we talk about her love of e-bikes and why she’s had seven of them.
My guest today is someone not from the ebike industry, but a huge fan of ebikes Maria Emmerich is a wellness expert in nutrition and exercise physiology. She’s the author of several cookbooks and nutritional guide books, including the bestseller keto, the Complete Guide to success on the ketogenic diet. Maria and her husband adopted two boys from Ethiopia. They live part of the Year in Wisconsin, and part in Maui. And now they all have ebikes. In this episode, I chat with Maria about how she got interested in ebikes. And the many ways that she and her family use theirs. Without further ado, here’s Maria. Hi, Maria.
Hey, Tony. Thanks for having me.
Well, thank you. I I’m so inspired by your story and, and all the things that you do. I’ve been following you for several years. Since I’m also a ketogenic person. Awesome. But you have an amazing story about ebikes.
I do I do. I it’s like, oh, man, I think it’s the best money I’ve ever spent in my life. I mean, no lie. I’ve, when I was 16 years old, and I got my license, I bought this cheap little Yamaha motorcycle.
Oh, wow, this was, what, 23 years ago now. And I brought it home and I hid behind the garage for my parents until I had the gumption tell them that I spent $400 on a motorcycle. And before I knew it, he already gave it back to the guy. I don’t even think he got his money back. He just gave it back to them. I got my money for my dad. But he said you are never gonna ride a motorcycle. And I always loved the freedom of just, you know, the wind blowing in your face and all of that, but I didn’t like the noise of motorcycles.
Okay, and so then the E bikes came out and I was like, wow, I want one of these and what happened? We live you most of the time. We live in Wisconsin. And we live in the St. Croix Valley area where it’s very steep hills, very steep cliffs. And we adapted to children. And we had a baby and a toddler. And I wanted to go on these long bike rides, but there was no way. I mean, I don’t care how strong you are.
There’s no way you could bike up these steep cliffs with pulling a trailer behind you sure, with two kids. And so my husband’s like, let’s see if this E bike could do that. And this was an E bikes just came out. And so he got I can’t remember. I don’t know if it might have been a stroller. I think that was kind of the first e-bike that came out. Do you remember?
Well, so so my history, I go back to 2001 with Lee Iacocca, and he had ebikes back then, but they were nothing like, you know what? Obviously, stromer makes? Yeah. And so yeah, stromer has been in the game quite a while.
Yeah, it was I think it was 2011. When I got my first ebike and I, it was a stromer. And it was you know, they were pricey then. So it was kind of an investment on our end. But it was the best money I ever spent. I would go on our long bike rides, and we would sing the boys would, I would make their little keto push pops and they would bring push ups along the neighbors would wave and it was just like so much fun. And now we spend half of our year in Maui and I don’t have a car here. We just have ebikes even the kids have their own ebikes Oh, that’s awesome. Yeah, they’re 10 and 11. Now, I have one very mature boy that was ready for an E bike when he was nine. But the other child we had to wait a little bit until he was older just because he just wasn’t very responsible.
Because there you know, you have to be very alert when you’re on your bike. You know, it’s a lot of people in Maui think I’m crazy because there’s a lot of maybe not this year but tourism. People aren’t watching for bikes. It can be quite dangerous. But I believe if you are, yeah, if you’re alert and ready, I mean, it is. It’s like my silent motorcycle that I’ve always wanted. And I just love that my whole family can go on our long bike rides. And I don’t have to worry about you know, getting tired or anything like that.
That’s fantastic. What, what are the boys have?
They? And the first ones that we had for them were swagtron Okay, um, they’re meant to be commuter bikes that fold up, we needed something small, obviously. And those are the old ones, but our current ones that we like better are quality sports. NEEMO.
